Circle Of The Spineless #40

CoSButton1

I recently hosted Skeptic’s Circle, but I’ve got to tell you…COTS feels a lot more like home. I’m just as much an entomology student as a skeptic…but I try to focus this blog on insect biology as much as I can with occasional forays into other subjects.

So without further ado, I give you this month’s COTS submissions!

Ted from Beetles in the Bush has a great post about Goldenrod Leaf Miner biology. I come from a state that used to be a lot of tallgrass prairie. It’s pretty much all gone now, but there are a lot of restoration efforts ongoing and Ted’s post showcases a species that’s pretty important to these efforts.

Andrea buzzes about a carpenter bee she saw at work. Cicada killer wasps get very much the same reaction around here.

Mathew Chatfeild of The Ranger’s Blog encountered the largest horse fly in the UK. We have a similarly sized species here in Iowa…and I have been attacked by it. While not exactly pleasant, it could have been much worse.

Zen Faulkes has a great post about cricket-bat interactions. Believe it or not, crickets are pretty fascinating critters…as are a lot of their predators.

Vicky of TGAW has a great post on entomophagy. I’ve recently started to experiment with this, as well. I’ll post results if I ever get anything decent.

The Natural Capital has a great post on Tiger Swallowtails. If you’ve never seen a Tiger Swallowtail larva…they’re really neat snake mimics.

Mike of 1,000 Birds has some photos of invertebrates he found in a recent hike in Letchworth State Park in New York. I’ll conclude this carnival with Mike’s post so I can encourage you to go out and find some invertebrates of your own for next month’s COTS at Southern Fried Science. You’d be amazed how many of your local invertebrates look like something you’d find in a rain forest!

  3. Hi- I asked my editor to submit a post for CotS #40 – but I’m thinking she may not have found your email address. I can’t find it myself, but maybe I’m just not looking in the right place. I’ll enjoy browsing this month’s edition anyway. :-)

  4. I’m so sorry…it’s at the bottom of my admittedly very lengthy ‘about’ section. I added some measures to keep spam to the account at a minimum. My E-mail is at the bottom of the post I have stickied…and since I fully plan on hosting COTS once more, I’ll just post it here and I’ll definitely be sure to make it more visible in the future.

It’s cheshire.entomoblog…and the address is hosted by gmail (@gmail.com).
