Single parenthood and navigating the treachery of academia.

I tend to try to stay away from personal topics, because I like to blog pseudoanonymously for a multitude of reasons which are explained very well here (the exact same reasons, actually). So I’m not going to go into great detail about my situation. To be honest, if you go to ISU I’ve got to [...]

Should I go to University?

I got a lot of good entries for Skeptic’s Circle this week, and I got one entry I thought deserved it’s own post.
The post came from Skeptigirl, and it’s a subject that kind of recieved a ‘hell no’ knee-jerk reaction from me at first because of how entrenched in academia I currently am. She, however, [...]

Back at Iowa State!

I just started my new semester here at Iowa State and I’m friggin excited.
This semester is probably going to be one of my most important semesters while I’m here (if not THE most). I’m hoping to study evolution in medical pests, but I haven’t completely decided if I want to study pesticide resistance or the [...]

Science Journalism and Blogging

So I haven’t been on the blogosphere for too long, but my weblog is just starting to get some decent traffic (mostly as a result of the researchblogging posts I try to do about once a week or so) and I’m just becoming aware of some of the conflicts that take place regularly on the [...]

Finals, Living Away From School and School Accountability

So tomorrow I have my last final. It’s in a class I’m not particularly worried about failing, so that’s good. I’m not particularly stressed out over the test, but I’ve still been studying my ass off for two days straight. I should be fine. So that’s not what I’m worried about.
Unfortunately, I live about half [...]

A Public Service Announcement

Okay…so a few weeks ago, we had our first snowstorm. This was followed by a day or two where temps were above freezing (reaching about 50 degrees or so) and another snowstorm.
This generally happens a couple times every year…and this pattern of thawing and freezing turns the sidewalks here at ISU into white minefeilds. The [...]

Well, guys…it’s been fun but I’ve got to take a two week vacation

more music charts
Pretty much true. I’m fine on the whole money thing, but I’ve got to keep my 4 point GPA. Sanity’s barely here as it is. Unfortunately, this means I’m going to be going on an administrative leave until finals are over.
No fear, though…I still have a few canned posts I think you’ll find [...]

Rant Puppets for the Win!

They it right on the head…with a banana.

Rezpektez teh opinenz!!!1!!1!!!

Matt Nisbet made a post yesterday which I found interesting.
As I understand his position, he’s essentially criticizing what he views as labeling the other side a debate as a means of argument.
In theory, he’s right. However, it seems he’s never been here on the interwebs.

This is exactly what the internet is supposed to be used for!

I’m doing some research right now on how biocontrol programs have basically destroyed our native moths. Basically, we have a problem with an introduced pest called the ‘gypsy moth’ which I better know as Lymantria dispar. It was introduced way back in the early 1860s and has been nomming up our forests ever since. Infestations [...]
